Currituck County Mainland established circa 1668, and takes its name from an Algonquian word meaning “The Land of the Wild Goose.” First part of Albemarle County, Currituck was one of the state’s original five seaports. Currituck County’s Mainland-the “Gateway to the Outer Banks”-sits on Currituck Sound, which is 35 miles long and from four to 15 miles wide. The Mainland area is dotted with quaint towns and charming communities including Grandy, Coinjock, the city of Currituck, Point Harbor, Poplar Branch, Moyock, Barco, Maple, Silgo, Mamie, Powells Point, Harbinger, Jarvisburg, Maple, Spot, Aydlett, Waterlily and Knotts Island.
