Currituck County Mainland established circa 1668, and takes its name from an Algonquian word meaning “The Land of the Wild Goose.” First part of Albemarle County, Currituck was one of the state’s original five seaports. Currituck County’s Mainland-the “Gateway to the Outer Banks”-sits on Currituck Sound, which is 35 miles long and from four to 15 miles wide. The Mainland area is dotted with quaint towns and charming communities including Grandy, Coinjock, the city of Currituck, Point Harbor, Poplar Branch, Moyock, Barco, Maple, Silgo, Mamie, Powells Point, Harbinger, Jarvisburg, Maple, Spot, Aydlett, Waterlily and Knotts Island. With its waters, marshes, woods and warm weather, Currituck County is known as a sportsman’s paradise. The area has long been famous for its excellent hunting and fishing. In fact, hunters were joining the still-active Currituck Shooter’s Club as early as the 1850s. Windsurfing, boating, surfing, golf, sailing and tennis are other favorite activities. The tallest sand dunes on the East Coast are located in the neighboring Outer Banks and hang gliding from them is popular. Also, movie theaters, go-cart tracks, water slides, arcades, miniature golf and playgrounds offer entertainment for the whole family. The Currituck County School system provides excellent schools for the county’s students. There are also three universities nearby: Elizabeth City State University, College of the Albemarle and East Carolina University.
